Google algorithm improvements coming – with Goggles

The art of search engine optimization (SEO) is a fluid, ever-evolving discipline that requires time and careful consideration of the ‘rules’ as dictated by the various search engines. For the last decade the golden fleece of algorithms (the methods that determine how pages are indexed and ranked) has been Google. And while Yahoo! and now Bing clamor for market share, they continue to chase (with some success) Big G. Looks like the playing field is about to change again, as Google has announced over 550 new enhancements to their search engine product later this year: http://ow.ly/1al7c.

Catching my attention is the announcement is the beta version of Google Goggles – a mobile-based application that will allow pictures, not words, to be used as search criteria. Goggles will allow you to use your smart phone as a driver for your fact-finding missions. Here is the overview video:

  1. Gotta love how the Germans say “Google Goggles”.

  2. Goggles appears to be neat – I need an Android phone – not available on iPhone.

However there is Similar Images search

The solution I’ve been wanting – I have a piece of art – I want to find if the artist has done other work and if they might be famous. I want to use my image to find other similar images. Goggles looks like it could do that. Now to buy an Android phone.

  3. There is a plugin for Firefox called TinEye that does a reverse image search: http://www.tineye.com/

  4. For the iPhone user, I also highly recommend the SnapTell applications: http://www.snaptell.com/apps/. Been using this one for months and it is an easy and intuitive way to track down music/books from a photo. It provides search results for both online and brick-and-mortar inventories. Very sweet.

  5. Pricecheckah is better then SnapTell on the iPhone. It uses the same great redlaser barcode scanner, but gives you results from Amazon, eBay, walmart, overstock, buy.com as well as Google. It even let’s you put in your own stores.

    And it’s only 99c.
